Week One: Self Portrait

This week, students were asked to create a self-portrait based on the samples shown above. The style had to be recreated and altered to look like themselves. Three drafts were created in order to achieve the final outlook, based on tutor feedback.

The first few drafts were created using Procreate, but after further investigation, Adobe Illustrate was needed in order to complete this task.

The feedback given was determined based on the similarities between that of the original photo and the students work so alterations had to be done in order to effectively complete the task. Lines were not prominent enough and the features did not display that of the sample were just some of the feedback given by the tutor. The colours and students images were based on their own choice. The process of ideation to finalisation was displayed form left to right.

Week Two: Logo Design

The concept 'WAVE' was given to students to create a logo for a new app concept to promote to investors that connects local music artists to a wider audience. An Australian vibe was to be the inspiration of the design to allow for an embracement of the Aboriginal culture as there was no approval prior.

Originally, the students used circular patterns that resembled much like that of an Aboriginal artwork and had to then be further redesigned to give the same effect. the final design was an ode to the nature that Australian is well-known for an easily identifiable. The colour choice was taken from our blue oceans that surround our great land.

'aise' and 'native wind' were both of the inspirations used for this logo including the round edges and flora used in each image.

The feedback given allowed for the student to be able to rectify the flaws in the logo and be able to deliver an acceptable design to the client.

Week Three: Event Poster
An event poster was designed to advertise an upcoming studio event. Students needed to take inspiration from the sample poster as the client did not pay for a licensing fee.

To the best of their ability, the students had to recreate the zebra on their posters to replicate that of the original. The fonts used were researched specifically to be able to give a striking similarity between the two of them without directly copying and pasting. Unsplash was used to reference in image of the zebra. Adobe Illustrator was used to draw the body of the zebra and InDesign was used to collate the poster together.

Tutor feedback was minimal as the fonts in the top right and lower left corners needing adjusting in order to be read from afar.

Week Four: Large Format Poster Print

Students were asked to create a protest poster that reflected the broader context referenced in this weeks course. It had to resonate with the student allowing for the subject matter to be personal e.g using specific words to strive a change in others.

Originally, inflation came to mind considering interest rates are rising and the cost of living is at an all time high. However, after nearly completing the task InDesign crashed and deleted the file.

The idea then changed to include something about food wastage and support local growers then to animal exportation. This was associated with the amount of circus' and zoos keeping certain animals only for profit and not for their own benefit. The idea had its own spin, identifying that the clown was the main subject of both of these posters. The final was the Circus animals as that was more relevant at the time.

Week Five: Photoshop Images

Photoshop was introduced to students this week, inviting designers to conceptualise and design a surreal composite image. Stock images were provided and chosen by students using unsplash as source material. The combined images should almost look believable, with the background image seamlessly integrating in with the subject. the elephant on a cloud was the sample image sued to identify the caliber of work that needed to be done. Colour, shadows and tone all had to be match that of the background.

The idea behind the two images was to create a wasteland that people with masks had on because the background was unsafe to live in, identifying that the world as we know it is heading for disaster.

The below image was a draft that was then given feedback on in order to improve on.  The subjects did not look in the right place as their colour scheme (black and white) was hard to adjust to the coloured grim background.

To allow for a more realistic photoshop, the subjects were moved in order to create a more convincing illusion that they were actually present in the scene. Their feet were covered to hide the sharp lines created in the grainy subjects poster image and the shadows were shortened and brightened to reflect the time of day and place they were standing in the image.

Week Six: Gender Pay Gap Article
The Gender Pay Gap document needed to be redesigned in order to increase readability and exposure to a wider demographic. The report is valuable but the information and contents was difficult to read and was not getting enough of an audience to make a difference in society. This task was designed to allow for a more user-friendly experience when researching about the gender pay gap. Unsplash was provided to allow for students to use images as a way of breaking up text in order to make the reader more engaged with the content.

Websites such as ChatGPT were allowed to be able to summarise the key information on this document to be condensed into two pages. Quill Bot was used in this assignment to summarise key information needed to convince the audience that the gender pay gap is still relevant in 2022.

The brown colour scheme allowed for the tone of the article to be gender neutral. feedback given on this assessment item prevented the outcome from being business like and give the article a pleasing to the eye approach by using circular images in order to make the article look more magazine like and more engaging.

Week Seven: Product Photography

This weeks task consisted of pairing three items together found at a grocery store to be displayed as ingredients in a perfume company. Random objects were collated in order to complete this task. Arrangement was completely up to the student.

The colours green and yellow were key in this photo composition as the contrast between different colours would have been difficult to change depending on textures of objects and styles. The colours green and yellow are also very vibrant and are pleasing on the eye. It is also the Australian colours. The variety of yellows used allowed for a difficult but exciting assessment to work on.

Students then had to collate images both from organic and non-organic light and edit them to present to the perfumery. Pineapple lollies, a yellow V can and a tennis ball were all used in these images. The hot sauce red provided a nice contrast in the natural light and gave the viewer something more to look at.

Week Eight: Liveworm Project

For the final weeks task, a few students were given the chance to recreate some tasks given from real clients to previous students. Stickers were made to be able to identify students when in their wellbeing sessions. A variety of pronouns were mentioned (she/her, he/him and they/them) were all created to display gender neutral tones but allow for a fun and enjoyable experience that was once a grey area.

The final blank sticker will be written with a provided brown marker to create the simple yet fun tone of these stickers. thicker lines and more emphasis on the outside letters allowed for a more even text when reading from afar.
